Dr. Susan
Cardenas was previously a Health Coordinator for La Clinica De Familia, Inc., a
Las Cruces based community health center that focuses on providing quality
healthcare services to families throughout the region. Dr. Cardenas believed in
the mission of that organization and what they provide to New Mexico families.
As the Health Coordinator for their Primero Los Ninos program from 1990 to
1993, Dr. Susan Cardenas was able to gain valuable experience in the provision
of health care services in public health, as she learned about the needs of the
community for affordable, quality health care throughout the region. During her
time with the organization, she was charged with the duties of implementing the
health needs assessments of families who were involved in the Comprehensive
Child Development Program, monitoring the program’s health budget expenditures
to meet the healthcare needs of over one hundred families, and networking with
other healthcare-related agencies in order to better track the healthcare of
families within the program.
Other
primary responsibilities of Dr. Susan Cardenas included the coordination of
health screenings for children involved in the program, facilitating nutrition
and health-related parent education and staff development trainings, and
writing grants for the institution. She was also responsible for the
supervision of NMSU Community Health interns working at the organization, and
for providing health-related technical assistance to the program’s staff.
Dr. Susan
Cardenas also worked as the organization’s health educator during the same time
frame, providing classes for program parents and staff. The experience she
gained at La Clinica De Familia has served her well throughout her career.
